Centrally located
The hostel is situated right in the heart of the Dresden Neustadt quarter. This is the lively, trendy district of the city, with lots of pubs, music venues, restaurants, cafes and small stores. Thus, the Neustadt is considered quirky, artisitc and alternative- as are we! The baroque Old Town is situated on the other side of the Elbe river, around a 30 minute walk away.
It is only 4 tram stops to the historic Old Town. The closest train station is "Dresden-Neustadt" and takes about 20 minutes to walk there. The main station is reachable with the tram, and will take around 25 minutes. Due to the central location of the hostel, the nearest tram stop is just around the corner.
Dresden is quite the paradox. Despite its name, the New Town holds Europe‘s largest collection of Wilhelminian-style buildings (popular between 1870-1914). Whereas the Old Town was nearly completely destroyed and rebuilt from the late 90s to 2000s, the New Town was relatively untouched, so these old-style buildings are a marvel. Here, you are really taking a step back in time, and you can wander through the streets and see some of the oldest buildings in Dresden.
During the reign of the socialists, the New Town, was left to its own devices, uncared for, which paved the way for many artistic types and alternative lifestyles to flourish.
To this day, the New Town is covered with street art and graffiti as a form of expressionism and ist full of cool and beautiful hidden gems. The New Town is still considered trendy and alternative with a particularly vibrant night life and cafe culture, so it can be loud and busy, particularly on weekends.
Alternatively, Dresden's historical Old Town is more busy during the day. The beautifully restored buildings attract both locals and visitors to the area to enjoy wandering the streets, marvel at the architecture, and enjoy the gardens and parks.
The Old Town also hosts the popular shopping malls and souvenir shops. So, it can be useful to replace any broken gear, or clothing, or to buy gifts. The Old Town is relatively deserted after night fall and does not have much of a "night-life culture". For this, even the locals come to the Neustadt!
