In 1990 people here founded the micro- nation, the "BRN". They printed and used their own money (the Neustadt Mark) and also bordered the Neustadt area with white lines on the streets. This event is celebrated with a huge fest ever since.
Not long anymore and our quarter will be closed for cars a whole weekend long to celebrate the biggest event of the Neustadt area of the year, the BRN!
The BRN (Bunte Republik Neustadt - Colourful Republik of the Neustadt) started as neighbour festival organised by inhabitants of the Neustadt and became bigger and bigger with every year since the 1990. After the reunification of West and East Germany a hopeful spirit came up, people wanted to create a new way of living after the Socialism. They also wanted to avoid the now possible gentrification of their quarter and the rose of the rents. Back then people here founded a micro- nation, the "BRN". They printed and used their own money (the Neustadt Mark) and also bordered the Neustadt area with white lines on the streets. This event is celebrated with a huge fest ever since.
Since then, the Neustadt quarter changed a lot, the anarchic character is more or less lost, the area has been renovated, rebuild and commercialised. The Neustadt became the scene quarter of Dresden: an area with more than 150 bars and clubs only within 10 walking minutes in each direction. It is the area with the most bars on every square meter in whole of Germany! Many tourists visit the quarter now (only 20 years ago tourist guides recommended to avoid the area when visiting Dresden), but it is still the favourite living- area for many families (the Neustadt is also an area with the highest birth rates in Germany), students and immigrants.
The lively Neustadt is still the lefty counterpart to the traditional and conservative Old Town of Dresden. It is still colourful, not only by the mix of the people, but also with its nice street art and cool alternative shops and projects.

Please also remember, that the festival is from neighbours for neighbours. Everybody is welcome to enjoy the open spirit of the quarter. But remember beeing respectful to everybody. That includes no littering and no yelling. Use the public toilets or just ask in restaurants and bars.
