From May 8th to 16th 2010 its again time for the biggest Dixieland festival in the world.  Dixieland is a style of Jazz which developed in New Orleans at the start of the 20th century.  Dixieland jazz combined brass band marches, French Quadrillas, ragtime and blues with collective, polyphonic improvisation by trumpet (or cornet), trombone, and clarinet over a „rhythm section“ of piano, guitar or banjo, drums, and a double bass or tuba.

Some of the highlights of the festival are the big steamboat parade on the river Elbe on May 12th, the big parade through the city center on May 16th and a big gala on May 15th.  Many concerts just happen on the streets in the city center, those ones are free. The better concerts will take place in clubs and tickets should be bought well in advance.

Its a big event in Dresden, so if it happens that you visit our town on those dates you can’t escape.  You will see plenty of old man drinking beer and listening to this kind of music on the road.  For those who doesn’t like the music its a curiosity, for the others it will be a remarkable experience.

Jedes Jahr im April gibt es ein besonderes Ereignis in Dresden:  Das Filmfest „Dogs Bones and Catering“.  Dabei geht es darum in kurzer Zeit (40 Stunden) zu einem vorher unbekannten Thema einen maximal 3 Minuten langen Kurzfilm zu erstellen.  Dabei kann jeder mitmachen, egal ob Profi oder Amateur, egal ob alleine oder als Gruppe und auch das Genre des Filmes ist frei, der Film muß nur eben zum Thema passen.

Das Thema für 2010 wird am 9.4. um 24 Uhr in der Bar Holda am Martin-Luther-Platz 4 bekannt gegeben.  Dabei wird das Thema mit Spannung erwartet, in den letzten Jahren waren das Themen wie „weißes Rauschen und fröhliche Libido“ (2009), „Verbaltransfer“ (2008) oder „Alte Schachteln“ (2007).  Das Event gibt es übrigens seit 2005, es ist damit also schon die sechste Ausgabe.

In der Zeit bis zur Abgabe wo die Werke dann vorgeführt werden wird man vermehrt Menschen mit Kameras in der Hand durch die Stadt laufen sehen.  Abgegeben werden muß bis zum 11.4., 16:00 Uhr.  Dabei fallen schon die ersten Teilnehmer durchs Sieb weil sie es zeitlich nicht schaffen oder weil sie zwischendurch aufgegeben haben oder weil der Film den Regeln nicht genügt.  Aber es gibt trotzdem eine Menge Film zu sichten, so gab es 2009 48 Finalisten, 2008 war der bisherige Rekord mit 55 Finalisten.

Am 16.4. findet dann in der Schauburg die große Galanacht statt wo die Filme vorgeführt werden und die Gewinner prämiert werden.  Als Preise gibt es, passend zum Titel, den Goldenen, Silbernen und Bronzenen Knochen, der Gewinnerfilm wird bei den Filmnächten am Elbufer gezeigt, der Zweitplazierte Film wird in der Schauburg gezeigt und der dritte Platz erhält 3 Kisten Lößnitz-Pils.

Lothar Lange ist ein Fotograf der, ursprünglich aus Hannover stammend, sein Herz an Dresden und speziell an die Neustadt und die entsprechenden subkulturellen Kreise verloren hat.  So organisierte er eine der früheren BRN’s mit und man begegnet ihm heute immer wieder auf der Straße mit seiner Kamera.

Dabei entstehen Fotos genau jenseits der Hochglanz-Touristen Bilder und zeigen auf diese Art ein viel facettenreicheres, ein viel authentischeres Dresden.  Seine Bilder dokumentieren die Zeit und es lohnt sich auf seiner Webseite herumzustöbern.  Ein paar Highlights:

Das ist Dresden!  Auch lohnt es sich, besonders natürlich für Dresdner, auf den Bildern nach bekannten Gesichtern zu forschen.  Da Lothar unermüdlich scheint, sollte eigentlich jede mehr oder weniger bekannte „Szenegröße“ irgendwo mit vorkommen.  Viel Spaß beim stöbern.

„History against the grain.“

We invite you on a tour of the city which follows the history of the persecution and extermination of the Jews in Dresden from 1933-1945. The audioscript leads you to twelve places which stand as examples for anti-Semitic persecution in Dresden during the national socialist period. Each audio contribution addresses historical and philosophical aspects of the crimes. In principle, you can choose the order of the places freely. The audio script doesn’t follow any overall chronological or story. The numbering is a suggestion made by us and is meant to serve as an initial orientation. Thus, you can begin with Track 2 in the inner courtyard of the New Synagogue, and continue to the other locations.

There are two ways to obtain the mp3-audio files. You can either borrow an mp3 player and a map from the lending stations or download it yourself to your personal player from this website. You can also download the map from this site. The individual tracks are divided into individual mp3 files, allowing you to choose between the individual tracks during your city tour. The corresponding numbering on the map corresponds to the respective track on the player.

Each track is between 10 and 20 minutes long and demands concentration from the listener. The complete listening time is thus approximately 3 hours. Please allow sufficient time to give the audio script the necessary attention, and remember to allow yourself breaks. Moving about the city also takes time and shouldn’t be underestimated. Some locations are on busy roads, so please take precautions and bear in mind that wearing headphones means that other outside sounds may not be easily noticed.

A nice trial, isn’t it? But believe me, its not so boring here as the movie tries to suggest you! Check it out, real (night-)life is much more exciting, people are more diverse, more children are around (on daytime), streets are busier.   There is something what makes the area really different to the rest of Dresden.  Maybe its the number of bars and clubs all close together in a small area, maybe its the streetart you can find everywhere, maybe its the tolerance of the people to all the different ways of living, maybe its the young lively atmosphere.  Probably its a mixture of all those.

Eine der besten Möglichkeiten sich einen Überblick über die Stadt zu verschaffen sind die verschiedenen Türme in der Stadt.

Der teuerste  ist der Turm der Frauenkirche am Neumarkt.  Hier kostet der Aufstieg 8 €, ermäßigt 5 €, dafür kann man aber durch die Kuppel des berühmten 2006 wieder aufgebauten Wahrzeichen Dresdens gehen.  Der Turm ist 91 m hoch, die Aussichtsplattform liegt in 67 m Höhe, und markiert quasi das Stadtzentrum.

Ganz in der Nähe ist der 100 m hohe Turm des Schlosses, genannt Hausmannsturm.  Hier kostet der Eintritt nur 3 €, ermäßigt 2 €.  Die Aussichtplattform liegt in 38,62 m Höhe und liegt ebenfalls mitten im historischen Stadtzentrum.

Es ist ebenfalls möglich die Stadt vom Rathausturm aus zu besichtigen.  Der Rathausturm ist 100,20 Meter hoch, die Aussichtsplattform befindet sich in 68 m Höhe.  Hier kostet der Eintritt ebenfalls 3 €, ermäßigt aber nur 1,70 €.  Interessant sind auf einer Zwischenplattform ein paar Bilder mit dem selben Blick aus den 50er Jahren, wo man die von Trümmern befreite Innenstadt quasi leer als Wiese mit ein paar einzelnen Schafen darauf sehen kann – und das mit dem aktuellen, voll bebauten Ausblick auf die Prager Straße vergleichen kann.

Eine weitere Möglichkeit in der Innenstadt einen Turm zu besteigen ist der Turm der Kreuzkirche.  Hier kostet der Eintritt nur 2 €, ermäßigt 1 €.  Der Turm ist 94 m hoch, die Aussichtsplattform ist in 54 m Höhe.  Es gibt keinen Fahrstuhl, es müssen 265 Stufen bis zur Aussicht überwunden werden.  Es kann sein das der Turm  zu bestimmten Veranstaltungen in der Kirche geschlossen ist.

Auf der Neustädter Elbseite kann man den Turm der Dreikönigskirche besteigen.  Dieser ist 87,5 m hoch, die Aussichtsplattform befindet sich in 45 m Höhe.  Dafür locken aber die günstigsten Eintrittspreise für eine Turmbesteigung von 1,50 €, ermäßigt 1 €.

Eine weitere Möglichkeit Dresden von oben zu sehen ist das Kuppelrestaurant auf der Yenidze.  Das Cafe wirbt damit der höchste Biergarten der Stadt zu sein.  Ein Besuch ist kostenlos, aber wer etwas verweilen will sollte wohl ein Getränk bestellen.  Der höchste Punkt der Kuppel ist 62 m, das Restaurant liegt etwa 20-30 m darunter.

Und vollkommen kostenlos, aber ein kleines bischen außerhalb, ist der Blick vom Trümmerberg hinter dem Ostragehege, kurz vor der Mühle.  Das besondere an diesem Berg ist, das er, wie der Name schon sagt, komplett aus den Trümmern der Stadt besteht, die nach Kriegsende 1945 hier zusammen getragen wurden.  Der Berg ist „nur“ 30 m hoch, bietet aber trotzdem einen interessanten Blick aus dem Westen auf die Stadt.  Wer den Weg scheut, den Ausblick gibts mit vielen nützlichen Informationen auch im Internet hier.

Not a long time ago the only possibility to get to Dresden was, by the means of public transport,  to go by train.  In many other countries in Europe you can go around much cheaper by buses.  The reason that there are hardly bus connections between big cities in Germany is a law, that, if there is already a train connection, its not allowed to have another public transportation.  This rule was made to protect the train from competition.

So what happens is, because there is no competition, train prices are so high that ride sharing became very popular and is a common way of cheap travelling in Germany.  But the rules are about to change, at least thats what the new federal government promised.
For some reasons in the last years more and more bus connections came up.  One reason is that some of the bus companies are owned by Deutsche Bahn, the German railway company, so they wouldn’t sue against themselves.

So today you can travel to Dresden by bus from almost all directions, but its sometimes not very frequent or they go at uncomfortable times.  Here is a list of bus connections to and from Dresden:
