From April 20 – 25 the 22nd International Short Film Festival will take place in the Schauburg cinema, the Thalia cinema and the Kleines Haus theatre. 1,330 films are battling it out in the International Competition and 483 in the National Competition for the much coveted Golden Horsemen. The most entries have come from Germany, followed by France, Great Britain, Spain and the USA. For the first time ever, films have also been submitted from Peru, Vietnam and Swaziland. Because of most of the films are not translated this festival is also open to non German speakers.
Filmfest Dresden was founded in the spring of 1989 and since then has developed from being a forum for banned or rarely screened feature films into a well positioned international festival for short films. Fictional and animated shorts up to a maximum of 30 minutes compete here in various categories. Filmfest Dresden is Europe’s best endowed short film festival with prizes and awards worth €60,000. In addition to the competition sections, the festival week provides an extensive range of special programmes with documentaries and experimental films, a children’s programme, retrospectives and numerous country-based programmes as well as a supporting programme with panel discussions, master classes and workshops. Filmfest Dresden does not regard itself as merely an event for media professionals. Rather it is and foremost a festival that welcomes the general public in Dresden and the neighbouring regions.

One of the landmarks at the square Albertplatz close to the Neustadt train station is this 11 stories high scyscraper:
It was build in 1929 and at this time it was one of the first scysrapers at all in Dresden. At this time there was a very controversal debate about the building. It was a sign of a new modern time right within an Wilhelminian style living area. So conservative people were indignant. With its hight of 37m it caused a lot of protest from the Dresden people.
For building they used a new concrete and they were able to finish one story per week, which was a masterstroke.
1945 the scyscraper resist the bombing of Dresden. The building was so robust it even survived an airplane crashing into it!
After the war it became home of the Municipal Transport Services of Dresden (DVB). Thats why its called until today the “DVB-Hochhaus”, the DVB scysraper.
Since 1996 it is empty and people were searching for a reasonable use. There were many rumours about a students hostel or a hotel, but never anything happened.
The latest plans are to build a big shopping center (why is it always a shopping center – no other ideas?), a big basement garage, offices and apartments in the upper floors. Most of the people involved appreciated the proposals, so we will see, maybe in the near future this prominent building will be in use again. Lets cross fingers.

Jedes Jahr führt das Dresdner Stadtmagazin Sax eine Umfrage unter Dresdnern durch was die beliebtesten Clubs, die besten Restaurants oder auch wer die beliebtesten Dresdner sind. Die Ergebnisse sind immer interessant.
So ist seit Jahren unangefochten die Schauburg das mit Abstand beliebteste Kino in Dresden (32,0%), gefolgt vom Kino Thalia (13,7%). Nummer 3 ist erwartungsgemäß das PK Ost (10,6%). Wie immer liegen die Multiplexkinos abgeschlagen auf den Plätzen.
Der Beatpol ist der beliebteste Konzertclub (17,3%), gefolgt vom Alten Schlachthof (13,1%) und der Groove Station (11,1%).
Bei den beliebtesten Dancefloors liegt die Groove Station auf Platz 1 (14,4%), danach kommen mit etwas Abstand das Alte Wettbüro (9,6%), ganz dicht gefolgt von Katy’s Garage (9,5%).
Auch ansonsten gibt die Liste ein paar ganz klare Empfehlungen: Essen gehen im Villandry, einen Nachmittagskaffee trinken im Cafe Combo und sich zwischendurch eine Currywurst reinschieben bei Curry und Co. Dieser Imbiss gewann übrigens schon Preise als zweitbeste Currybude Deutschlands.
Nicht verpassen sollte man die BRN (2010: 18. bis 20.06.) , das Stadtfest der Dresdner Neustadt und die Filmnächte am Elbufer. Diese finden dieses Jahr vom 15. Juli – 12. September statt.
Übrigens: Bis auf das PK Ost, den Alten Schlachthof und den Beatpol sind alle hier genannten Locations weniger als 10 Minuten Fußweg vom Hostel entfernt, oft sogar in direkter Umgebung.

Zum sechsten Mal findet im Jazzclub “Tonne” und an anderen Locations das Jazzwelten Festival statt. Vom 19. bis 27. März spielen u.a. die Jersey Band, Lucibel Crater und Garry Lucas aus den USA, Lorenz Raab’s Bleu aus Österreich, Jaap Blonk und Studenten einer Jazzgesangsklasse aus den Niederlanden, Francesco Cuca’s Skrunch aus Italien sowie Konrad »Conny« Bauer, Christopher Rumble und Barbara Buchholz mit Pedda Borowski aus Deutschland.
Neben der Möglichkeit einzelne Eintrittskarten zu erwerben gibt es auch einen Festival-Pass für 60€. Damit kann man alle Veranstaltungen im Rahmen des Festivals besuchen. Diese Veranstaltungen reihen sich ein in das zehnjährige Jubiläum des Jazzclubs “Tonne” in Dresden. Trotz immer wieder auftretender finanzieller Problem die vor allem in einer unzureichenden öffentlichen Förderung begründet liegen, hat es der Club geschafft diese lange Zeit ein sehr anspruchsvolles Programm zu gestalten. Wir wünschen dieser Jazz-Institution in Dresden auch für die nächsten 10 Jahre alles Gute und macht weiter so!
Nicht besonders häufig liest man gute Nachrichten in der Zeitung. Sollte sich dieser Bericht bei sz-online.de aber bewahrheiten, dann könnten in den nächsten Jahren die Alt- und die Neustadt einander deutlich näher rücken.
Geplant ist es demnach die älteste Brücke Dresdens autofrei und als Flaniermeile zu gestalten. Damit hätte die Brücke das Potential ähnlich der berühmten Karlsbrücke in Prag zu einem lebendigen Ort und vielleicht einem weiterem touristischen Highlight zu werden. Es wäre ja noch spannend zu erfahren ob dann auch Straßenkünstler dort ihre jeweiligen Künste (Musik, Malerei, Jonglage etc.) aufführen dürften und somit dem Stadtzentrum ein Leben jenseits historisierender Barockfassaden und Konsumtempeln einhauchen könnten oder ob das den konservativen Stadtvätern und -müttern dann doch zu weit geht. Zu hoffen wäre es.
… der da mit zarten Sonnenstrahlen und Temperaturen über dem Gefrierpunkt an mein Fenster klopft? Holterdiepolter regen sich die ersten Frühlingsgefühle: gute Laune, Gier nach Frühlingsluft, maßloser Hunger auf Eiscreme und hibbeliges Warten auf die erste Bordsteinparty ohne Blasenentzündung. Ich will auch Schneeglöckchen und Krokusse und dass der Alaunpark bald wieder voller entspannter Menschen ist. Ich will mich auf den weißen Blüten am Elbufer betten und mich an den ersten Beachvolleyballern am Citybeach ergötzen. Ich möchte Sektfrühstück in einem der Schlossparks und mit einem Rock auf mein Rad. Bald ist’s so weit!
